In the town of Big Whiskey, two cowboys came by. They entered a saloon for some sexual pleasure. One of them carves up a prostitute’s face. Delilah, the girl that got cut, giggled at the size of his penis. The other cowboy entered the room and hold her up to aid his friend.

Alice, the chief whore, came in and started to defend Delilah. Skinny, the owner of the saloon, also entered and stopped the fight by holding a gun against them. Alice explained that she giggled because she did not know any better.

Afterward, Little Bill Daggett (Gene Hackman) arrived at the place of the crime. The prostitutes demanded a true act of justice. But the sheriff gave the men an easy way out. “These were just hard-working boys acting a little stupid,” he claimed. As punishment, the cowboys had to offer six horses to Skinny. Bagget considered this as compensation for the “damaged goods.”

$1,000 bounty

The whores of Big Whiskey were infuriated by Bagget’s decision. A bounty of a value of $1,000 has been put on those two cowboys.

Whoever kills those 2 men, will receive this award!

A retired William Munny (Clint Eastwood)

William Munny is a man who used to be involved with crime, whoring, and drinking a lot. His passed on wife taught him to live a better life without the bad stuff.

Now he is a pig farmer that is trying to raise two kids. A son and a daughter. Munny does not want his children to know about his past.

Clint Eastwood always seems the best choice for these kinds of roles. The western genre suits him well, and we all know him for it. He just nails the cowboy look and feels. When you look at him, you can think that he has been through a lot. That is what makes him unique.

The Schofield Kid’s proposition

A young man named himself “The Schofield Kid” and is ready to make some mischief. The new bounty got his attention, but he is looking for an extra man for the job. He pays a visit to William Munny and proposes him to aid him in his journey. Munny first declined his offer by telling him that he does not do that anymore. He made a promise to his wife that he intend to keep.

Later on, Munny changed his mind. The money is needed to raise his kids. But also for the unjustified actions of the two cowboys.

Munny needs someone who he can trust and recruits his old partner, Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman). The Schofield Kid was not pleased by this. The agreement between him and Munny was broken. But they did not leave the kid much choice. He could choose between either going alone or with three.

They have come to an accord of forming a new group and splitting up the reward.

Hero or villain?

The perception of good and evil is to be questioned. The meaning of what right is or wrong can be confusing. This film dares you to examine your way of thinking about what is considered to be heroism.

Munny tries to redeem himself by burying the past and following a positive path. The Schofield Kid tries to become more than he proves to be. Sherrif Dagget sees himself as a highly respected man but believes what he is doing is right

It is hard to say who the villains and heroes are in this magnificent film. I cannot say that Munny is a hero because of his past. He has done some terrible things that cannot be denied. In the end, I still feel that I can forgive his actions of the past because of his will to become a better man.

Conclusion

This is a must-see for every Western fan! Not only is this is a thrilling cowboy story. The movie is not afraid to show that not every hero is perfect. Some exciting conversations make us questions some beliefs. A movie should challenge us to feel this, and this one surely delivers!
