The divorce, the legal process feels real in Marriage story
I knew that divorce was terrible news, but not to this extent. Noah Baumbach shows us how ugly it really can become by divorcing using lawyers and etc.
In Marriage Story, Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) wants to divorce and is taking a lawyer to defend her and forcing Charlie (Adam Driver) to find his own lawyer. If he doesn’t, he can lose custody of his own child.
Right from the start, we get to see how the law can be hard. Some of the rules are absurd but were made to protect some people. Although they are unfair towards some people.
During the procedure, it is the middleman that does the talking. In addition, they are not shy to see their opponent at his worst and say it out loud. The lawyers would do anything to make the opposite party look bad.
I would not want to be in that situation as it’s hard to accept what the lawyers use in their advantage to win a case. To be honest, it’s horrifying. Nicole and Charlie did had the best of intentions, but they get overrun by the hard talk of the lawyers.
Who side to chose? Charlie or Nicole?
There is no good or bad side. Both of them have their mistakes and struggles.
At the beginning of the movie, they both made letters of what they love and hated from each other. It was something beautiful to hear, and it was something to look back on. The letters were to show the audience that this couple was in love.
Charlie wants to stay in New York, as he is a successful director. But Nicole wants to move out to L.A. for pursuing her dream as an actress/director. This leads to complications for their child’s custody.
During their divorce, Charlie and Nicole remain friendly to each other, even if there is some conflict between them. You can still feel some tension while they’re trying to go on with their lives.
“Marriage story” is told in both perspectives, Charlie and Nicole.
As an audience, we can understand both parties. Divorce is hard and heartbreaking. We get to see Nicole having breakdowns, but so does Charlie. These are the impacts that divorce has. There is no real winner in this “game.”
What really got me was that they were still trying to be kind to another while being in a divorce stage. There were small moments that were nice and sad at the same time.
Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson have solid performances. This was Adam’s strongest one ever. There was one scene where they were in a dispute, and it is one of the best acting performances of the year. I was mostly amazed by Adam, props to you, sir.
Not only is this a movie about divorce, but it is also a love story in its own way. Breakups can be heart wrecking, especially when kids are involved.
“Marriage Story” is Noah Baumbach’s best work until now. It cannot be overlooked. Prepare yourself to have your heartbroken, while having outstanding performances of Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver.
The film is available on Netflix!
