A suburban fantasy world in Onward
I always love it when movies live in their own world. This time it’s in a fantasy world with all the mystical creatures living in the modern world.
There was magic in this world, but it is lost due to all the new technology. Magic was too hard to learn when technology simplified life. Over time, people forgot about magic and its existence.
It’s a Pixar movie, so you don’t have to take everything seriously. Some things don’t make sense in this new world. There are flying creatures who don’t fly anymore. If we follow the movie’s logic, it’s because there are planes, so they don’t need their wings. These are the things you have to set aside, as we all know, this doesn’t make sense. No one takes a plane for a short distance.
But those illogical things don’t bother me, as long as I get a good story.
At the heart of the film are two brothers, voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt. The dynamic between them is fantastic. They have such great chemistry together. I would love to see those two avengers playing in another movie together.
They are opposites from each other. Chris Pratt’s character is loud and confident, while Tom Holland’s character is shy and has low esteem.
My favorite one was definitely Chriss Pratt, the big brother. He was just hilarious, and there was more depth to him than I anticipated. Before going into this movie, I thought he was only going to be used for comedic purposes. This wasn’t the take, and I’m glad that it took me by surprise.
Both brothers have to find a magical stone to resurrect their dad, and they have 24 hours to do it. The quest that they embark on encounters a lot of adventure, but it’s also very emotional.
Onward focuses on the relationship between two siblings. Showing us that the bond of two brothers can be strong and fulfilling.
But other characters aren’t left in the dark. The mom, for example, went on her own quest when she discovered her boys left. They also have a stepdad, and he isn’t a jerk. Most times, these characters are left aside, but what Onward did right, is to give them their own “side story.”
The Ending of Onward
The most satisfying part was the ending. Was it predictable? Yes, but for some reason, I did not see it coming. I’m easily surprised, to be honest.
I’m sure some people will be disappointed by it, but you can’t please everyone.
I just love how the filmmakers approached it. The message is very emotional and beautiful. A lot of small morals are learned throughout the story, but the final one is perfect.
Thank you, Pixar, for delivering another great movie. They are still on a roll! Making my eyes tear up. Its partnership with Disney provides the world with the best-animated films each year. They keep on surprising me!
