Charlize Theron is once again, a bad-ass woman
The movie’s title refers to Charlize Theron, as she’s the oldest immortal crewmember. There are only a few people that are gifted with this mysterious power. They don’t know where it comes from. However, this power isn’t forever, as one day it will stop working. So technically they’re immortal until their power stop working.
Just a little side note. It’s a comic book movie. Not really a comic book movie that I know of, but I’m hooked to know more about it. I’m not going to read it, but I hope they will make another film to expand this universe.
So Charlize Theron is a very skilled mercenary. In other words, she’s totally bad-ass. However, she’s still better in Mad Max: Fury Road as Furiosa. In The Old Guard, it sometimes felt ‘forced’, especially in the beginning. In Mad Max, it never felt that way as she felt ‘naturally’ like a tough woman. I hope I didn’t confuse you right there, but I believe some will understand what I mean.
Also, there is one awesome scene at the beginning in the plane with her. I totally loved that!
A group of immortal mercenaries
The immortal ones stay together and form a small crew. In this film, they feel when a new immortal came to existence and feel the urge to find her. That introduces us to Kiki Layne’s character, Nile, who healed from a fatal injury. She was interesting and was very skilled in combat as she was in the army. I’ve never seen a movie with Kiki Layne, so this was my first film of her. She was pretty decent.
Another actor who I was looking forward to seeing was Matthias Schoenaerts because he’s a Belgian actor. He played “Booker,” and yeah, I’m from Belgium too, so I was curious about him. I thought he was pretty solid and mysterious. You knew he’s been through some shit. Heads off to you, sir! The other guys were also good, but a bit less interesting.
The crew of immortal warriors is being hunted by that one guy of Harry Potter, Harry Melling. He played Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter Franchise. I never thought that awkward guy was going to become a villain one day. Although he really looks like a creepy villain.
The film itself feels pretty mediocre to me, however, I was interested in knowing more about them and their powers.
So, I’d definitely watch a sequel. So Netflix, make one more!
What I liked was that the group itself was more about human connections. You can compare it to vampires. They don’t age, but the rest of the world does. That makes them less connected to others. Also, if they had many connections, they would become jealous of their powers, which caused incomprehension. And that creates hate towards them. In summary, it’s a lonely life.
The action, on the other hand, was quite impressive. It did feel like a rip-off of John Wick’s style, although he’s still king. But this doesn’t mean the action in The Old Guard is terrible.
There’s also a lot of diversity in the movie without being pushy. I find that to be a plus.
The Old Guard is definitely worth a look during these weird times. I’m already happy when I can see a new movie. Thank you Netflix for still releasing content!
