According to the timeline, in what order should you watch all movies and shows of the Star Wars Universe? Recently Disney+ came with the news that they are going to release many shows and movies. About certain titles, it is still unclear where these will take place.

There are some traditional ways to revisit the Star Wars saga. You can watch it on the cinema release or in chronological order. This post will focus on the chronological order. However, I will give you a list with the theatrical release order.

Although the chronological order might be the obvious choice, some people don’t think it’s very enjoyable because you start with The Phantom Menace. Chronologically watching also spoils the biggest twist in the series by revealing Luke’s father’s identity prematurely. However, we all know that already.

Watching the films through their theatrical version also has its props. In case you’ve never seen the movies, this is the order I recommend to watch.

Of course, the “I’m your father” surprise remains intact, but the storyline is mixed up. You jump between Episodes IV-VI, then Episodes I-III and Episodes VII-IX.

And then there are the new Anthology films like Rogue One (2016) and Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018). These films take place between the originals and prequels, but will be released during the sequel trilogy. You can see how this becomes a mess, so we create the perfect sequence that solves these problems. Here is the ultimate guide to The Star Wars Universe Timeline.

The Star Wars Universe Timeline

WARNING: Explanations will contain spoilers. All the way from below the post, you’ll find simplified lists with only the movie + show names.

I will divide the new timeline of the Star Wars Universe into six categories.

The High Republic: The new starting point of the Star Wars canon, which is situated 200 years before the Prequel films. This will be explored through the High Republic books and comics that will be explored starting next year. There will also be a TV series set during this era on Disney: The Acolyte.

Fall of the Jedi: This is the complete fall of the Jedi Order and the return of the Sith. It begins with The Phantom Menace and culminates in Revenge of the Sith.

Reign of the Empire: Explores the rise of the Empire and the chaos it causes. It includes events in the television series The Bad Batch and the film Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Age of Rebellion: The slow but sure rise of the Rebels in the decades following the rise of the Empire. An era that begins with Star Wars Rebels, continues in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and ends with Return of the Jedi.

The New Republic: The chaos following the apparent death of Palpatine and the Empire’s struggle to survive. The New Republic takes shape in this day and age. The Mandalorian takes place during this period.

Rise of the First Order: The remains of the Empire organize themselves in the First Order, and try to reclaim the galaxy. From the series Star Wars: Resistance to the movie The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker.

Star Wars Universe Timeline in Details

This list follows the chronological order of the Star Wars Universe timeline. The last PS4 game is also included. However, there are still movies from where we don’t know yet where they are taking place.

Unknown Time Periods:

  • Lando series
  • A Droid Story
  • Visions

Now let’s start!

The Acolyte

The Acolyte is Set 200 years before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. It will be the first live-action Star Wars production set during what is known as the High Republic era. The series is described as “a mystery thriller that takes the viewer into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark forces.” Russian doll maker Leslye Headland oversees the show.

The Phantom Menace (1999)

This film follows the jedis, Obi-Wan Kenobi and his master Qui-Gon Jinn as they try to protect the queen of Naboo and encounter a young slave boy named Anakin Skywalker. You are also forced to go through two hours of Jar-Jar Binks and sleep-inducing negotiations in the Galactic Senate. So if you’ve seen this movie before, just skip it at your next rewatch. Although it contains some details that are important for another prequel movie, and it has a great lightsaber duel. I personally don’t mind it that much, so i’ll watch it anyway.

Movie Review – Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

Attack of the Clones (2002)

While the original trilogy has shown Darth Vader as the ultimate evil villain, Attack of the Clones begins to show us how that led him to the Dark Side, with his mother’s death by Tuskan Raiders. There is also the growing love affair with Queen Padme Amidala. At the same time, Obi-Wan Kenobi stumbles upon a clone army being built for the Republic that will form the base of the Stormtroopers of the Empire.

The Clone Wars (2008-2014 + 2020)

The series started with a movie of the same name. The series takes place in the Star Wars universe between Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

The Clone Wars originally ran from 2008 to 2013 with five seasons. The series came to a sudden end after Lucasfilm was taken over by Disney. A series of 13 episodes that had already been produced were released under the title The Lost Missions as the sixth season on Netflix in 2014, in 2020. Six years after the last series, a new season was released on Disney+. This seventh season with 12 episodes serves as a final closing.

The Bad Batch (2021)

If you’re wondering what happened to our beloved Bad Batch at the end of The Clone Wars, you’ll probably get an answer soon. Disney has announced a new Clone Wars spin-off series, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, which will explore the adventures of Wrecker, Crosshair, Echo, Hunter and Tech after Order 66 and the Rise of the Empire. The series will hit Disney+ in 2021.

Revenge of the Sith (2005)

The last film of the prequel trilogy shows that Anakin’s heart turns to black. Although initially excited to hear his wife Padmé’s pregnancy, visions of her death begin to poison Anakin’s mind, allowing Supreme Chancellor Palpatine to bring him to the Dark Side of the Force. This leads to the destruction of the Republic and the murder of many Jedi, including all young Padawans, by the newly named Darth Vader.

The Fallen Order (2019)

The game fits chronologically within the Star Wars universe between episode III and Episode IV, five years after the events recounted in The Revenge of the Sith.

Cal Kestis is an ancient Padawan who now lives in hiding, having survived the Order 66 decreed by Emperor Palpatine and the great purge of the Jedi Order that followed. Now a scrap metal dealer on the planet Bracca, his life was turned upside down again when the Imperial Inquisitors, charged with tracking down and eradicating the last Jedi, finally tracked him down.

Solo (2018)

The origin story for the coolest man in the Star Wars universe offers a lot of unnecessary background stories. However, I did somehow enjoy it while others didn’t. Still, it’s an entertaining robbery movie that gives us more information about the most important ship in the galaxy, the Millennium Falcon, including Han Solo.

Solo: A Star Wars Story take place roughly two decades after The Phantom Menace.

Obi-Wan Kenobi (2021)

The Obi-Wan Series is set ten years after Revenge of the Sith and nine years before A New Hope, where we first meet Obi-Wan Kenobi as an older man (played by Alec Guinness), a bit like The Mandalorian set a few years after Return of the Jedi and before The Force Awakens.

Rebels (2014-2018)

This show takes place in the fictional Star Wars universe and takes place between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope, in a period when the Galactic Empire strengthens its grip on the universe. The troops of the Empire hunt down the last Jedi while the Rebel Alliance is formed.

Fourteen years after the end of the Galactic Republic and the fall of the Jedi Order, the 15-year-old orphan Ezra joined a group of rebels. Together they fight against the Empire. Ezra also becomes aware that he is skilled with the Force. He is accompanied by Kanan, who himself was only a Padawan when he managed to survive Order 66.

Andor (2022)

The Andor series takes place five years before the events of Rogue One takes place: A Star Wars Story, which is dated at 0 BBY by Star Wars: Galactic Atlas. That means Andor will take place in 5 BBY.

The new serie Andor is currently being developed by Lucasfilm. It will be broadcast on Disney+. The series will be spy thriller starring Diego Luna, who reenacts his role as Cassian Andor from the anthalogy film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Rogue One (2016)

The first of the new “Anthology” movies, Rogue One, is filled with A New Hope background story. It follows the daughter of the creator of the Death Star, Jyn Erso, who is freed by the Rebel Alliance and is tasked with finding the plans that lead to the destruction of the ultimate weapon. Yes, Rogue one ends where A New Hope begins.

A New Hope (1977)

Although technically the fourth film, chronologically according to the Skywalker Saga, A New Hope is worth watching first, purely because it is the beginning of everything. It is also the only Star Wars film that treats viewers as if they have never seen the Star Wars saga before. So here it will start with Luke meeting Obi-Wan, getting a lightsaber and finding out more about the Force and Darth Vader before heading out to rescue Princess Leia and destroy the Death Star.

Movie Review – Star Wars: A New Hope

Rogue Squadron (2023)

Rogue Squadron gets its title from the elite starfighter team. This was founded by Luke Skywalker during an attack on the Mako-Ta space docks. In addition, the battle is described in Star Wars #52 (a comic strip included in Disney’s Star Wars canon) and takes place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Luke named the squadron after Rogue One, the team of rebels who stole the Death Star plans to destroy it in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It is unclear if Rogue Squadron will relate to the plot of Rogue One, but their similar titles suggest that it is possible.

The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

You know what they say. Empire Strikes Back, the fifth movie is widely regarded as one of the best sequels of all time. After the first battle on the frozen planet Hoth, Luke sets off to start his Jedi training at Yoda, while Han Solo and Princess Leia go to Cloud City to meet Han’s friend Lando Calrissian. But eventually, Han and Leia are betrayed and then used by Father as bait to lure Luke. It all culminates in a confrontation between Father and Luke and ends with a twist.

Return of The Jedi (1983)

Now that we have learned the background of Darth Vader / Anakin, it is time to see how he redeems himself with all that knowledge in hand. Plus, after rescuing Han Solo from the clutches of Jabba the Hutt, we see Luke trying to defeat his father and the emperor while Han and Leia work to demolish an almost completed second Death Star. There are also teddy bears with stone-age technology that also help to destroy the Empire.

The Mandalorian (2019 – …)

Mandalorian, the live-action Star Wars TV series has become a huge success at Disney +, and there’s a very small, cute reason for that. You’re probably already spoiled by now due to all the Social Media.

The show follows Pedro Pascal (who also played in Game of Thrones) as the titular Mandalorian. He is a gunfighter and bounty hunter who, five years after the events of Return of the Jedi, makes his way to the furthest corners of the galaxy, well before the events of The Force Awakens. And it’s maybe leading to the creation of the First Order. In the second season, Mando searches for more information on the history of Baby Yoda. It’s without a doubt one of my favorite Tv Shows.

Ahsoka (2021)

In December 2020, Lucas film announced that Ahsoka would get her own limited series about Disney+, titled Ahsoka. Developed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, it exists alongside The Mandalorian and Rangers of the New Republic through interconnected stories culminating in a “climactic story event”.

Rangers of The New Republic (2022)

Just like Ahsoka, Rangers of the New Republic is another new Star Wars show set during the timeline of The Mandalorian, which also features Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. Other details were not confirmed. However, The Mandalorian has already introduced some New Republic pilots, such as Paul Sun-Hyung Lee’s Captain Carson Teva, so he may return. Most intriguingly, Ahsoka, the Mandalorian, and the Rangers of the New Republic will all be building a crossover event. Fans can expect the storylines to feed into each other. Everything will probably be pointing to Grand Admiral Thrawn as an overarching villain.

Resistance (2018 – …)

The series takes place in the Star Wars universe and on the timeline, it takes place three decades after the events in Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. In addition, it also takes place six months before the events in Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

The Force Awakens (2015)

The first Star Wars film Disney made after buying the franchise is set 30 years after Return of the Jedi. We see a new conflict emerging between the burgeoning Republic, led by Leia Organa-Skywalker, and The First Order, which has risen from the ashes of the empire. Between all this there is a young girl named Rey who seems to be very strong with the Force.

The Last Jedi (2017)

After tracking down Luke Skywalker, Reys’ next challenge is to convince him to train her. Luke is unwilling because of his failures with Kylo Ren. Meanwhile, the Republic’s remaining troops are on the verge of total destruction thanks to The First Order, making Rey and Luke their only hope.

The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

The conclusion of the Skywalker saga is now out and available at Disney Plus. The film sees the return of Emperor Palpatine as Kylo Rens The First Order and the rebels led by Rey prepare for a final confrontation on the planet known as Exegol.

The chronological order of the film

This is the order in which the films were released in the cinemas. Although it keeps Luke’s father’s twist intact, the storyline is mixed up. You start with the originals, then go to the prequels and end with the sequels. This is confusing, especially for children who are introduced to Star Wars.

The chronological order of the films

If you want to watch films in order of the events that take place, and thus spoil the identity of Luke’s father for beginners, then proceed as follows:
