The Men in Black are back
Over five years after the success of the comedic Science Fiction film Men In Black, Will Smith once again puts on the black suit to stop the scum of the universe as Agent J. Director Barry Sonnenfeld returns as well as Tommy Lee Jones as J’s grumpy partner K. But as is the case with every sequel, the challenge is to present the viewer with something new again. Did the makers of Men In Black II succeed in doing so, or is it just the same formula again?
Agent J (Will Smith), meanwhile, is on his own now that he has erased the memory of his partner K (Tommy Lee Jones) so he can retire peacefully. But when the murderous alien Serleena (Lara Flynn Boyle) descends on Earth, the Men In Black have no choice but to enlist K’s help. After all, he is the only one who possesses the information to stop Serleena and her alien henchmen. Although J is not looking forward to being commandeered by the grumpy old man again, he has no choice but to bring K back. On the other hand, he’s also unsatisfied with K’s replacements.
Although the story differs from that of the first part, Men In Black II is largely a repeat of what we have seen before. Once again, there is a search underway. This time, it’s not a search for a new agent for the organization but a retired employee whose help comes in handy. In this, the roles are reversed, though, but it does come down to the same thing.
In addition, there is again an alien monstrosity that must be stopped. In the process, J again has to deal with his emotions for an outsider who has unwittingly become involved.
In terms of story, it’s very similar. However, I do find Men in Black II to be funnier than the first one. The jokes get me and make me laugh out loud. My favorites in this one are Frank the pug and the worms. I wish I could just hang out with these guys. In addition to all the jokes and gags, there is also plenty of room for action and suspense.
Men In Black II, like its predecessor, is a versatile Science Fiction film that guarantees an enjoyable movie night. Despite the fact that the studio plays it safe by repeating itself a lot.
