Movie Review – Blue Beetle (2023)

Blue Beetle
is a 2023 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Directed by Angel Manuel Soto and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the film stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, alongside Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, and Susan Sarandon. In the film, Reyes, a teenager from El Paso, Texas, gains the scarab of the Blue Beetle, an alien artifact that grants him superpowers.

The film is a departure from previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU) films, with a more comedic and lighthearted tone. It also focuses on a more diverse cast, with Maridueña as the first Latino lead in a DCEU film.

A Pleasant Surprise in the DCEU Galaxy

Blue Beetle took me pleasantly by surprise. Admittedly, the trailers didn’t fully win me over, falling into that category of previews that undersell the actual goodness of the film.

At the heart of this film resides a powerful and universal theme: the unbreakable bond of family. Through a skillful blend of humor and heartfelt exchanges, Blue Beetle deftly explores the intricate dynamics that define family relationships. The conversations between characters not only evoke laughter but also carry a genuine emotional weight, creating a narrative tapestry that resonates long after the credits roll.

I can’t recall the last time I laughed so uproariously within the confines of a movie theater. A round of applause is due to his uncle, who unquestionably stole the show. The casting across the board was a definite win, adding to the film’s appeal.

What sets this film apart is its groundbreaking representation of Mexican culture and family values within the superhero genre. By bringing a Mexican family to the forefront, the movie adds a layer of authenticity and diversity that’s both refreshing and necessary. These conversations on screen not only shed light on the characters’ histories and motivations but also invite the audience to connect with the film on a personal level, forging a unique and impactful cinematic experience.

While it might not be the pinnacle of cinematic perfection, it unquestionably ranks among the more noteworthy entries in the DCEU lineup thus far. And here’s a twist – this flick is set to join the next chapter of James Gunn’s reboot saga, making its genre placement a bit of a head-scratcher.

It’s a real downer to witness the movie currently struggling at the box office, as it genuinely merits a heftier dose of recognition.
